Auriesville Shrine

The Auriesville Shrine, also known as Our Lady of Martyrs Shrine, is a Catholic pilgrimage site in Auriesville, New York. The Shrine is dedicated to three Jesuit saints and St. Kateri Tekakwitha. In the 1640s, Father Isaac Jogues and two lay Jesuits, René Goupil and John Lalande, went to the New World to convert the Native Americans. They were captured, tortured, and enslaved. All three were eventually killed for their faith and canonized in 1930. The Shrine also is dedicated to St. Kateri Tekakwitha, a Mohawk/Algonquin Catholic. She kept her faith in the face of religious persecution by the non-Christians in her tribe. St. Tekakwitha was canonized in 2012.
