Graffiti Alley Cambridge: Kobe Bryant

Graffiti Alley is an alleyway located in Central Square in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Local artist Geoff Hargadon created it in 2007 as a way to let local artists display their talents. Artists can freely paint on the wall, and no official rules are regulating the artwork. One of the wall’s more famous pieces memorializes Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna. Kobe Bryant was a professional basketball player and former star on the Los Angeles Lakers. On January 26, 2020, Bryant and his daughter Gianna died in a helicopter crash as they flew on from Gianna’s basketball game. Pilot error caused the crash. Following the crash, the Central Square Business Improvement District commissioned street artist Brand Rockwell (known professionally as Brandalizm) to create a mural of Bryant and his daughter. The mural depicts Gianna as an angel sitting on her father’s shoulders. It also contains Bryant’s jersey numbers (8 and 24).
