Lincoln Memorial

Due to the determination of Congress members Shelby Cullon and Joseph Cannon, the Lincoln Memorial Commission was founded in 1911 to ensure the construction of the memorial. The Lincoln Memorial was constructed after the Partheon in Athens by Henry Bacon, symbolizing the fight for democracy. The exterior is adorned with the Lincoln Steps and Plaza, and columns representing the 36 states that were in the Union at the time of Lincoln’s death. The interior is filled with inscriptions from Lincoln, murals depicting the former president’s morality as well as the famous statue of Lincoln.
