The Rensselaer Model Railroad Society was founded in 1947 as a student club for the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. The society is known internationally for its railroad model layout with miniature depictions of the communities from Troy, New York, to the Candian Border. The model is set in the 1950s, and all buildings illustrate the architecture and style of the area. While some of the buildings in the display are built from kits, the majority of the buildings were built from scratch. The main purpose of the Rensselaer Model Railroad Society is to offer its visitors and students a glimpse into the history of Troy.
