Stay Tuned, A Block was a sound installation by Ai Weiwei located on Alcatraz Island at Golden Gate National Park. The installation occupied a series of twelve cells in the A Block where visitors were invited to sit and listen to spoken words, poetry, and music by people who have been detained for creative expression. The exhibit also showcased works made under conditions of incarceration. Each cell was attributed its own recording in order to have variety and include a diverse selection. The installation’s selection included Tibetan singer Lolo, Russian feminist punk band Pussy Riot, and Robben Island Singers. All of these selections were from individuals or groups that have advocated against their government. The purpose of Stay Tuned, A Bock, was to evoke introspection and understanding of the power of human voice.
